Action around Bethlehem Children with Disability

Improving the quality of life of children with disabilities across the West Bank

Nur Shams Refugee Camp

The children clearly enjoy their treatments – to watch a child of four who has never walked take his first steps, initially aided by the parallel bars and then to launch off unaided is truly wonderful

Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation

Some children will be admitted to the BASR for initial diagnosis and treatment. They will then be set on a rehabilitation programme before they return home.

Jalazone Refugee Camp

Life for refugee children in this camp is particularly harsh. Unemployment stands at 60%, there are high levels of disability, with limited services in place to address this. The supply of water to the camp is often rationed, and extreme poverty and overcrowding prevail.

The Sheepfold

Despite the upsurge of violence across the region, The Sheepfold continues to help children and young people with a wide range of special needs, especially those with no other place to go with severe disabilities.

Music Therapy

Music Therapy is a powerful medium which helps children who may struggle to express themselves. This project was initiated in 2015 by ABCD Trustee and Music Therapist, Canon Claire Tillotson, in conjunction with Paediatric Psychiatrist Dr Souha Shehadeh, who leads the Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation (BASR) Mental Health Team.

What we do

  • We identify disabities at the earliest possible age - when treatment can have the maximum effect for both the child and the the family
  • We provide ongoing treatment programmes
  • We fund individual children's specialist equipment - prosthetics and orthotics, wheelchairs, walking and seating aids, spectacles and hearing aids
  • We cover the cost of surgery, medication and therapy sessions
  • We support the children's families through education and provide home modifications
  • We fund upgrade training and developmental programmes for therapists
  • Our music therapy programme helps traumatised children to express themselves and come to terms with their lives

Above all - we help overcome the taboos still associated with disability - by taking the whole child and giving them hope and opportunity, enabling them to reach their optimum potential and find and rightful place in their society.

Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation (BASR)

Currently, ABCD supports the running of BASR's Community Based Rehabilitation Programme, who work across the Greater Bethlehem and Hebron region, and the BASR's Music Therapy Programme.

Jalazone Refugee Camp

Jalazone Refugee Camp near Ramallah started in 1948 with 3,500 people, it now houses around 15,000 residents. The Camp occupies 2 square kilometres, the same as it did when set up in 1948.

Nur Shams Refugee Camp

Nur Shams refugee camp is situated close to Tulkarem in the north west of Palestine. The camp was established in 1952 with a population of 3,000 people.

The Sheepfold

The special needs classes, development activities, physiotherapy and small-scale humanitarian aid to the children and their families, including medical expenses, that The Sheepfold offers are critical for these most needy of children.

Music Therapy

Music Therapy is a powerful medium which helps children who may struggle to express themselves. We aim to bring this therapy to the Refugee Camps, and to deliver two, rather than one, ten week Music Therapy projects a year.
