What we do
ABCD works with health centres (marked by the stars on the map) across the West Bank to ensure that they can meet the needs of their community in the long term. Priorotising child-centred holistic care delivered with their family's support at the heart of their community helps to fight stigmas still associated with disability.
The challenges facing these health centre teams include:
- Lack of funding
- Difficulties recruiting and paying local therapists
- Barriers to purchasing high-quality, appropriate equipment
- Lack of up-to-date practical training for healthcare professionals
- Accessibility of care for families (i.e. checkpoints, wheelchair accessible transport, unsuitable roads)
To overcome these challenges, ABCD works with the centres to:
- Identify long and short term needs and develop a project plan
- Rennovate the therapeutic spaces using local contractors
- Build relations with other local health actors to share services
- Purchase equipment
This allows the therapists to:
- Identify disabilities at the earliest possible age
- Provide speciaised ongoing treatment programmes
- Deliver and adapt bespoke equipment and home modifications
- Undertake surgery, provide medication and give therapy sessions at low or no cost to the families
- Run family support groups and community education sessions
