Situated near Tulkarem in the northwest, Nur Shams refugee camp was established in 1952 for around 3,000 residents. Today, it is home to approximately 10,000 people.

Overcrowding is severe, with no access to outdoor public space, playgrounds, parks, or football grounds. Electricity supply is unreliable, and water is rationed during the summer months.

Unemployment is around 60%, with up to 500 disabled people needing help. Since the unrest in 2023, escalating violence and destruction from raids by the IDF have rendered the centre beyond use at times, due to damage to the infrastructure as well as disruption to access for those with wheelchairs and walking aids.

ABCD has funded and installed a sensory room for children with disabilities to encourage sensory stimulation, reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus and emotional regulation and support balance, movement and spatial orientation.

2025 update

In February 2025, Nur Shams rehabilitation centre in the northern West Bank was further damaged and closed as part of the enforced evacuation of the UNRWA-run camp, with IDF troops taking over the centre for their use. Nur Shams has linked up with the Qaqun Charitable Society for the Deaf and Mute to collaborate in supporting children with mental and physical learning disabilities. It offers educational classes and a variety of special tools for all ages and levels, including a fully equipped sensory room.
