Hope through Hearing: Al Am’ari’s new audiology centre

Find out more about the new audiology centre we’re raising money to build in Al’Amari refugee camp, Palestine.

In Al Am’ari refugee camp, hundreds of children with preventable hearing loss are going without treatment because the specialist services they need aren’t available in the camp. The impact of this can be severe and lifelong.

Children who can’t hear their friends or family may experience delayed speech and language development, social isolation, low self-esteem and behavioural difficulties. In school, they may struggle to follow lessons and fall behind, while on the playground, it can be difficult to play with friends, missing out on the childhood they deserve.

But with early detection and intervention, much of this can be avoided. That’s why we’re raising £40,000 to help build Al’Amari’s first dedicated audiology centre. This amount will cover approximately half the cost (£84,000) of building a new audiology centre in Al Am’ari refugee camp, within the camp’s existing ABCD centre.

What kind of services will be provided by the audiology centre?

Our new audiology centre will operate five days a week, providing expert, clinical care that could help a Palestinian child regain their sense of hearing.

  • Comprehensive hearing assessments carried out by trained audiologists
  • Hearing aid fitting and maintenance
  • Early screening tests for infants and young children to prevent future hearing loss
  • Referrals for more complex ENT (ear, nose and throat) and ear health issues
  • Community workshops on ear health and protecting hearing

How much will it cost to visit our audiology centre?

The services provided by the audiology centre will be heavily discounted. We estimate that the centre will cover the cost of 80% of treatments and equipment, with families only required to provide the remaining 20%.

Who can use our audiology centre?

The audiology centre will provide support to children with hearing loss in Palestine, including those who live inside Al Am’ari camp and those outside of the camp.

Why is this audiology centre so important?

Without this audiology centre, children with hearing loss in Al Am’ari refugee camp will likely go without the support they need to hear again, which can lead to isolation, falling behing on education, and missing out on vital communication skills.

How can I support your new audiology centre?

The best way you can support our new centre is to donate to our fundraiser. Your gifts are vitally important, and could help a Palestinian child hear, learn and play.

Donations up to our fundraising goal will go directly to the audiology centre. Any additional funds will be used to support the charity’s work in line with its charitable purposes.
